ASPEN, COLORADO ENGAGEMENT SESSION

Adventurous Engagement Session on Independence Pass in Apspen, Colorado

It all took place in October. It was fall, the air was warm yet crisp. The leaves turning in their prime and the mountain roads were glittered in gold yellow as I drove on a middle to no where pass en route to Aspen, Colorado.

As a traveling wedding photographer I found myself in Colorado for a few weddings and adventure sessions. Rachel & Jake saw I was going to be out that way and we planned a session together to celebrate their engagement. They both met in Breckinridge so they knew they wanted these photo’s to emulate where it all began and especially in Colorado’s beautifully breathe taking (quite literally) mountains.

Rachel and Jake both live in San Diego, California now and drove their renovated ambulance 735 miles to Aspen, Colorado.

This is an important part of the story because I feel this resonates with who we are as people. Originally we had a few locations in mind and planned to be near Breckinridge. As the we got closer to the shoot we couldn’t help but feel awestruck by Aspen’s beauty and what the area has to offer. So with that, we flew by the seat of our pants and headed to Aspen. Maroon Bell’s was one of our original thoughts. But in the busy Summer and Fall months Maroon Bells is a popular destination that you need a reservation / permit for.

You can find information and reserve your time in the park HERE.

There are even gondola options to summit some of the lifts as well but all would take a little more planning / timing than we anticipated. You can find information on Aspen gondolas and lifts HERE.

Another alternative, we found a trail on Independence Pass and knew that was going to be where the magic was going to happen.

As I met these two, I knew I couldn’t miss them in their bright red ambulance. We hiked up the trail, cracked beers, and climbed boulders. As the sun started to go behind the mountain peeks, I knew it would be dark if we stayed and didn’t try to catch a glimpse of sunset. So we decided to head back down the trail and race up to the independence pass summit. We may have gotten a little discarded before going up to the summit and played in the fall leaves in the road. In my opinion, it was worth and really feels like an important part of their story and our adventure together. As we finally reached the top, the sun had officially set and blue hour dusk turned into night. I can’t lie as I felt a slight panic and lump in my throat. “There’s no light” I thought to myself, looking around the open mountain top peaks. Just a faint glow over the ridges and a flash in my camera bag. So I grabbed that on camera flash and we went for it! These two gave it their all and I honestly couldn’t be more happy with how these images turned out.
